Castles on the NE250

Ballindalloch Castle and Gardens 

A firm favourite for all our visitors on the NE250 is the Ballidalloch Castle and Gardens. Ballindalloch Castle has been the home of the Macpherson-Grants since the Sixteenth Century and today is one of the finest surviving examples of a classic Scottish baronial castle. If you visit the famous castle do remember to tag us! 

Tolquhon Castle 

During the Summer months visit Tolquhon Castle, See for yourself why Tolquhon Castle has been described as one of the most beautiful castles in Scotland.

Sir William Forbes intended this to be an impressive residence but don’t be fooled by its picturesque appearance – it was adapted in the 1580s to deter any hostile visitors!

Balmoral Castle 

 Balmoral Castle has been the Scottish home of the Royal Family since it was purchased for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in 1852, having been first leased in 1848.

The grounds, gardens, and exhibitions are normally open to the Public on a daily basis during April, May, June and July.

With our gift shops and café you can enjoy a wonderful day out at Balmoral. During November and early December they also offer a limited number of Winter Guided Tour dates.

Corgarff Castle 

An isolated tower house in the Cairngorms that was residence of the high-status Forbes family.

Originally a noble residence, Corgarff became an army base for hunting down Jacobite sympathisers and, later, whisky smugglers.

Now the history and heritage education for the NE250 doesn’t end with castles, with a wide range of festivals and museums. 

Peterhead Prison Museum

The former Victorian HM Convict Prison Peterhead is unique in scale, had the first state owned railway in the UK and part of the history saw the only time the SAS was used to end a domestic siege in Britain.

With many features it is a brilliant family day out. 

Scottish Traditional Boat Festival 

Packed with brilliant moments, the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival brings together boats, music, crafts, food and drink to celebrate the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Cheer on crews as they take part in competitive racing and sailing on the opens seas. Breathe in the aromas of fresh cooked fish, meats and other fine foods, while you wander through the Festival enjoying the atmosphere and the many activities and melodies around you. Watch skilled traditional crafters carve, weave, knit and sculpt wonderful creations, many of which you can take home as a reminder of the wonder of Portsoy and its authentic charm.

The Gordon Highlanders Museum 

The Gordon Highlanders Museum is a ‘5-star Visit Scotland’ Tourist Attraction based in the west end of Aberdeen. They are committed to preserving and sharing the legacy of the world-famous Gordon Highlanders Regiment for future generations to enjoy, providing a wide range of unique experiences for all of visitors, young and old.
